An International Student’s Entrepreneurial Journey from Rockhampton to Texas

Having attended many International Students Conferences in Melbourne, if there is one thing that I have learned from all the employers and city hot shots is that an international student could be the co-founder of a start-up.

Sounds crazy, right?

Well, it’s the truth, while the job market overall in the world is getting a hard scene to penetrate, start-ups are one thing that can constantly keep the employment rates up.

International Students already take up courageous move of moving from one country to another and it could be challenging at times to land the most satisfying job they want.

This is not to say, that International students won’t find employment. The best talent rarely ever goes unseen. However, the perfect dream job can never be guaranteed and that’s when the entrepreneurship comes in. If you have an idea that you believe in, why not give it a try? Being self-employed as challenging as it may sound is as satisfying as well.

Most of the students here will argue, that they need money in order to survive, they need a part-time/full-time job after graduating and couldn’t afford to do a start-up. Well, I agree but this is what 3 Day Startup taught me, you can always bootstrap your startup journey!

Bootstrapping in business means starting a business without external help or capital. Such startups fund the development of their company through internal cash flow and are cautious with their expenses.

Let me take you to the very beginning of my journey. It was a year ago, that I was a student like you, who wanted a secure job life, a student who had ideas in mind but would think that he has no courage, resources, and money to make them come true.

Then I got an e-mail saying that CQUniversity is hosting a 3 Day Startup program in Rockhampton, where they will teach you how to make your startup happen and how to kick start it. I signed up from Melbourne and was lucky enough to be sponsored by CQUniversity to fly to Rocky and attend the event.

After the intense training that the 3 Day Startup program gave in 3 Days. I could identify my startup idea, courage and a way to make it happen and I worked on it for a year.

Fast forward to a year later, with no expectation and hope, all I relied upon was the commitment of living my dreams and it got me an opportunity to go to Austin Texas in the USA to the 3 Day Startup Global Roundup to meet entrepreneurs and venture capitalists from all over the world. It gave me a fantastic opportunity to see the great Capital Factory.

I was one of three delegates from Australia to attend this event. I am grateful to CQUniversity for completely sponsoring my trip and accommodation in the USA.

Now, I don’t only have an idea and commitment, I also have the necessary contacts to help me achieve my dreams. 3 Day startup taught me everything that one needs for a start-up from vesting to the first hire.

  2. Hi Abhishek,

What a fantastic experience. Very clear story to understand, and your English is pretty good. I have not heard of 3 day start up before, but now I know. I’ve actually sent an inquiry to the website linked in your blog.

    Cheers,
    Anna
