CQUNI SPOTLIGHT- Featuring Scott Gibson

CQUni student Scott Gibson (pictured with his son, Smith) has immersed himself in the university experience this year, not only coming on board as the Central Highlands Region Higher Education Student Representative on the Student Representative Council, but also as volunteer at the Emerald Campus Open Day. He also plans to join the Emerald Campus Life Committee in 2018. After completing a Diploma of Information & Communication Technology he’s since enrolled in the Bachelor of IT. Scott recently attended the Student Leadership Conference and will also be pursuing undergraduate research as part of the Rising Star Program. He believes the facilities and quality of teaching will help him on his career change path into the IT sector.

What is your favourite film or book of all time?

Good Will Hunting. “How do you like them apples?” (movie reference).

What is the best thing about being at CQUni?

Opportunities. Opportunities everywhere. If you want to study abroad, you can through the Outbound services. Have a cool idea to tackle a social issue? Check out our Social Innovation initiatives. Want to develop your leadership skills? There are mentoring opportunities and extra-curricular leadership courses available.

This weekend is free – what would you do?

Take the family away somewhere, explore a new part of Australia.

Jamie Oliver is coming for dinner – What do you make for him?

If Jamie Oliver is silly enough to come to my place for dinner, then you’d better believe he is making it!

What is the best thing about your CQUni campus?

At the Emerald Campus Open Day I was lucky enough to get a tour of the VET facilities and meet some of the teachers. The workshops are very well equipped with great resources available for students to learn on, such as the multiple underground mining vehicles and the new Cummins test engine.

What was the moment that made you choose your career?

Catching up with my brother at the end of 2016 we were discussing career changes. I spend a lot of down time working with computers, so figured that I’d move toward that industry. Lacking any formal qualifications, I enrolled at CQUni two weeks later.

Describe the greatest moment of your life so far?

The day my son was born. Nothing could have prepared me for such a beautiful shift in the centre of my universe.

What is your favourite karaoke song and why?

Khe Sanh by Cold Chisel. As a terrible singer, I need backup to drown out my yodelling. Nobody sings Khe Sanh on their own.

Which country in the world would you most like to visit?

The Netherlands.

Which major sporting event would you most like to see live?

I would love to take my son to a Boxing Day Ashes Test when he’s older.
