CQUNI SPOTLIGHT - Featuring Bruce Young

Bruce Young is a Senior Systems Engineer for the Information and Technology Directorate at CQUniversity in Rockhampton but he also wears a number of other hats including NTEU Branch President as well as CQUni Council member. Among those titles Bruce is also a devoted husband to Joanne and father to two boys Michael and Travis. Bruce is also a CQUni alumnus and a proud supporter of CQUniCares scholarships and bursaries through workplace giving. Despite being supremely busy, in his spare time, Bruce is also heavily involved in local sporting activities including Aussie Rules, basketball and running.

What is your first memory?

My mum cleaning out the freezer. We had been on holidays and were moving house. The story was that the electricity company switched off in the house we were living in, on the day they were supposed to connect the new one. It was several days before we returned home after the power was cut, so there was quite a smell.

What is your favourite movie of all time?

Armageddon.

Are you a CQUni Alumni? If so, what did you graduate in?

Yes. Bachelor of Applied Science (Mathematics & computing).

This weekend is free - what would you do?

Saturday morning: start with ParkRun and then see what happens. Sunday: probably watch a few episodes of a TV series I have not had a chance to start watching yet and go for an easy long run in the afternoon (10-20km).

Jamie Oliver is coming for dinner - what do you make for him?

Something simple: steak and steamed vegetables followed by apple pie.

What do you like about the work arrangements at CQUni?

Flexibility and work-life balance. The work needs to be done, but the timing can have some give and take so that the needs of CQUni and I can co-exist. 🙂

What is a motto or phrase that you live by?

Relax. The work will still be there tomorrow. This stems from spending too much time thinking about work when not at work. It was not healthy and a change was necessary.

Which major sporting event would you most like to see live?

AFL Grand Final. I’ve been to an NRL Grand Final, but I think an AFL Grand Final at the G would be next level.

Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met?

Political: Julia Gillard and Sally McManus. Sporting: Shaun Hart.

It is the final week of the CQUniCares Appeal – if you haven’t already done so, please consider supporting students in need.
