CQUni’s Student Representative Council Co-ordinator Victoria Roome recently gave students from all over Australia the experience of a lifetime, by organising, with Australian University Sport, the recent Northern University Games from various locations, including the Rockhampton North campus. This mammoth event involved 144 teams from 12 universities competing in 13 different sports. But Victoria took it all in her stride with determination and pride because her goal is always to provide students with a memorable experience.
What was a recent highlight of your life?
Pulling off the recent Northern University Games with my colleagues was definitely a career highlight. Huge stats on that – 16 000 views on Snapchat, 20 000 views on other social media, 4000 attendees at the Welcome Ceremony, 1200 students participating in 12 sports across 13 venues. I drove 670km in four days between venues. It was a crazy week.
Are you a CQUni alumni? If so, what did you graduate in?
Bachelor of Business (Marketing)
Who has made an impact on your life? Why?
My family are a constant source of strength to me.
What is the unluckiest thing that has happened to you?
I lost my home in Cyclone Marcia in 2015 while eight weeks pregnant and with an 18 month old. Our contents were disposed of due to high density asbestos contamination. It was a tumultuous two years while we got everything in order and rebuilt our home, but we’re doing great now!
What do you love most about your role?
I love the interaction with students – watching them develop as leaders through our Student Representative Council, Student Mentor and Leadership Program, and various sports teams, clubs, and societies. I also love the interactions with staff – our uni has some great people here!
What is a motto or phrase that you live by?
“Water off a duck’s back” and “If not now, when?”
What’s the film you never get sick of watching and why?
Singin’ in the Rain or High Society with Grace Kelly - I love old musicals.
If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
To pause time.
If your office was burning down, what would be the one thing you grabbed on the way out the door?
Aside from my colleagues, the new university mascot (Birdy McBirdface)! Call our office if you wish to borrow him for an event!
