Dancing into my future

My name is Meridah Hunter and I have recently started my first year at CQUniversity studying the Bachelor of Creative Arts course majoring in dance. This course is CQUniversity’s first Creative Arts course in Cairns, and majors in contemporary dance, popular music and acting.

Before I started the course, I was very nervous and excited at the same time. I didn’t know what to expect from the course, the lectures, the university and the other students. However, I very quickly felt as if I had joined one big family.

The environment at CQUniversity is extremely friendly and encouraging, which not only boosted my confidence but my motivation and willingness to learn.

During my journey in this course I have displayed huge amounts of improvements in my dancing. My dancing has developed in technique and style, and I have learnt so much about the history and the current state of performing arts.

CQUniversity has provided me with opportunities to work closely with other creative arts students, all with unique skills. Through this, I have created my own network of people who are looking at working and studying in the creative industry.

I have also been blessed with the chance to meet and network with experienced people already in the creative industries, which include our lecturers and our creative arts guest speakers.

CQUniversity provides my cohort of students with the best opportunities, as they are constantly on the lookout for workshop and theatre collaborations. Throughout the course the university has provided guest speakers who are individuals that have worked in the industry for several years. They include singers, dancers, actors, MC’s, backstage managers and many more.

I have found myself getting excited and motivated after every guest speakers visit and have learnt things that will guide me through my transition from university to the creative industry.

At the end of the first term, the lecturers at CQUniversity are allowing us to put on a show for friends and family to see our development. As a young achiever, I can now see me dreams turned into realistic goals. CQUniversity has provided me with multiple opportunities which has and will continue to develop, guide and encourage me. I’m excited to continue my journey as it has just started.
