Why study changed my life

Hi, I’m Jennifer Hickey and after careful consideration about my future I decided I wanted more for myself and my children, following a marriage breakdown in 2003 leaving me a single parent.

I realised the only way to properly support myself and my family was to invest in further education.

Owning and operating a handful of hospitality outlets over the years gave me a passion for business which I wanted to explore more through study. The first CQUniversity TAFE course I studied was a Certificate III in Education Support (CHC30213), which qualified me to work as a teacher’s aide at my children’s school.

I then went on to complete two diplomas at CQUniversity in Mackay in business and accounting. Completing these diplomas gave me confidence to go to CQUniversity and study a Bachelor of Accounting. I completed my degree in 2013 at the age of 49.

Knowledge is Power

Since completing my qualifications, I am now the proud owner of Accountant Ready Services in Mackay (which – not incidentally – has the slogan “Knowledge is Power”). I recently expanded my business with the purchase of a tax partnership, Tax Store Mackay, which opens its doors in January 2017.

I believe I have the study bug where I’m always looking to learn something new. My next study journey will be to undertake further study in taxation at CQUniversity, enabling me to obtain my tax agent’s licence.

From learning to doing

I’m committed to growing a very successful business advisory and accounting practice and through this achieve financial freedom to be able to spend time volunteering in my local community and abroad.

I believe CQUniversity’s tagline “be what you want to be” is so true, my studying experience has been “life changing”. I left school after Year 10 so the opportunity to gain new knowledge and to keep growing as a person later on in life feels fantastic.
