CQUniversity PhD candidate Nattai Borges is on the fast-track to success. Not only did he just complete his thesis, and secure a full-time job in the university sector, he also recently won the European College of Sports Science Young Investigators Award for his research at a ceremony in Vienna - the first time a non-European has taken out the award.
What was a recent highlight of your life?
The last six months collectively have been a highlight, with the submission of my PhD thesis, accepting a full-time position at the University of Newcastle and also most recently winning the prestigious European College of Sports Science Young Investigators Award in Vienna, Austria.
What is the best thing about CQUni?
The best thing about being at CQU is the intimacy of each of the campuses. You really get to know most people well so whenever you have an issue there are a number of people you know personally who can help.
Who has made an impact on your life? Why?
My parents have been a major influence on my life. Both moved to Australia at a young age without speaking English and have accomplished so much. They have also always been very supportive of all my life decisions which I cannot thank them enough for!
What was the moment that made you choose your career?
I guess in high school I had a really great Science teacher who sparked my scientific curiosity. Considering I was also quite into sports the two combined when I left school where I began studying exercise physiology.
What is a motto or phrase that you live by?
I see life essentially as just a series of experiences so I try my best to continually do new things and gain new experiences. This has proven to be difficult but also very rewarding for me.
If you were down to your last $10, what would you buy?
You can’t seem to buy much for $10 anymore, but I would probably go to Eating World in Sydney’s Chinatown and get some dumplings.
What’s the film you never get sick of watching, and why?
Not so much a film but I would say I can always watch any episode from the first 12 seasons of The Simpsons. It was a show that I enjoyed as a child and as an adult for very different reasons.
