My name is James McLauchlan and I am currently a second year Bachelor of Psychological Science student. I officially started my journey at CQU as a Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) student during Term Two in 2015. At the beginning, I had no idea what to expect out of the course as I was never considered as ‘intellectually gifted’ in high school. Fortunately for me, my lecturers were so passionate about what they were there to do for the students. If it weren’t for Desley and Robyn and the amount of effort they put into their students, I strongly believe things could have played out differently for me.
I was reminded of something that I had long forgotten; which was how big of a role one’s determination played in just about anything they want to achieve in life.
I completed all of my STEPS subjects before the end of the year and achieved nothing but distinctions and high distinctions. With the support of my lecturers and my determination I got accepted into my undergraduate degree and received my letter of offer for Bachelor of Psychological Science just before the end of November.
STEPS taught me so much more than the fundamental skills I needed to pursue a higher education. It gave me the confidence I desperately needed at the time to chase after what I wanted and reminded me of the lesson to be passionate about something.
I would recommend STEPS not just to people looking to pursue a higher education degree, but also to the ones out there who might be unsure of the next chapter in their lives. I can only speak highly of the course.
