Creating happy smiles

My name is Katelyn Murray and I am an Oral Health student, completing my third and final year at CQUni in Rockhampton.

Helping people has always been something that I have been very passionate about and something I yearn for each and every day. Ever since the early years of high school I wanted to pursue a career in health, but with so many options to choose from, I was unsure of what it was I wanted to study. During year 12, I completed work experience at a local dentist and was offered a full-time position as a trainee dental assistant. This is where my passion for oral health began, and from then on, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

CQUniversity Rockhampton is one of the only universities in Queensland that offers the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy program. When I was offered a position in the course to commence in 2014, I felt extremely privileged to take part in the program. The program offers its first year by distance, which was excellent, as it allowed me to continue working part-time as a dental assistant whilst studying. The program has given me widespread experience through an array of clinical placements around the Rockhampton region, and provided me with countless opportunities to enhance my skills and knowledge. Some of these placements included: private dental practices, school dental services, a Sub-Acute Chronic Care Rehabilitation clinic and nursing homes.

What I’ve enjoyed most about studying Oral Health at CQUni is that it provides students with the opportunity to volunteer overseas, which I was lucky enough to be chosen to participate in July of this year. It was such a beautiful journey and helped me grow both professionally in my skills as a future Oral Health therapist, and also personally. I was able to help children in a positive and meaningful way and learnt so much about culture and diversity. I also built relationships with other practitioners who became valued mentors throughout my trip.

Reflecting on life after graduation, I feel truly inspired and excited to continue my endeavours for future volunteering wherever in the world it may be. I have had the blessing to learn from some amazing mentors throughout my university studies, who have helped shape and develop me into the confident and passionate Oral Health student that I am today. I truly hope that my story will inspire others to consider a career in Oral Health or even to utilise their skills to help those in need in developing countries through volunteering.

It truly is the most amazing feeling to love what you do!
