Prepare for your studies with OTV

Starting university can be overwhelming at the best of times, not to mention in the middle of a global pandemic.

In 2020, the ever-changing restrictions meant we could not host our usual face-to-face Orientation events, instead we delivered Orientation Our Way, a personalised, Orientation experience.

In Term 1 2021, we are excited to continue Orientation Our Way with the introduction of some on-campus social events. This term Orientation combines opportunities to tune-in, come-in, and drop-in.

At the heart of Orientation Our Way, is Orientation TV (OTV). In this blog, we’ve asked our events team to answer some of your burning questions about OTV and explain why it’s the best way to prepare for your first term.

Can you tell us about OTV?

OTV is a live webinar delivered online by staff, fellow students, and alumni. OTV brings you short, fast-paced, informative sessions including How to Uni, Student Life, and Course Essentials. International students must also attend a session called International 101. Attendance is compulsory.

Each session will be held twice throughout the week. The sessions will be delivered in an engaging, informative format and there will be plenty of time to ask questions and chat to your fellow students and CQUniversity staff.

How should I prepare for my session?

Come prepared with an open mind, and ensure your area is functional, preferably at a desk with a comfortable chair. In terms of equipment, you will just need a laptop, computer, tablet, or smartphone with an internet connection so you can access Zoom.

It’s best to also have a webcam and microphone to engage in the Course Essentials session and talk to your lecturers. You will not need this for the Student Life, How to Uni or International 101 sessions.

Other useful things to have on hand include your Student ID number, pens, highlighters, a notepad, water bottle, and snacks to keep you going. Keep these handy so you don’t have to miss anything!

What can I expect from a webinar?

Each session is made up of short segments and will run for 1.5 hours.

We have the best of the best presenters to ensure your virtual Orientation experience is fun and engaging. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, answer polls, have your say, and chat with your fellow students live!

We encourage you to ask questions as you are watching. No question is a silly question! If you have a question for the presenter, there is a Q&A function on the webinar that you can use. Alternatively, you can also talk to students using the chat feature on the webinar.

If I experience technical issues during a session, who can I ask for help?

You can contact the Technology and Services Assistance Centre (TaSAC) if you have any technical issues during the session. You can contact them via:

  • Phone: 07 4930 9090
  • Toll free: 1300 666 620
  • International: 61 7 4930 9090
  • Website: sdesk.cqu.edu.au

To wrap up, OTV is packed with all of the relevant information you need to be a successful student. Each session focuses on a different aspect of your overall student experience and will equip you with the knowledge and tools to start your journey. From learning how to enrol in your units, to joining a club or society, OTV will show you how you can make the most out of your time at CQUniversity.
