A day in the life of a Chartered Accountant

Chris Buckley graduated from CQUni with a Bachelor of Accounting in 2016. He currently works as a Chartered Accountant at Kennas in Rockhampton. Chris is particularly interested in the area of Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF). His career ambitions are to become an SMSF specialist and a registered SMSF auditor.

The first thing I do when I get to work is…

Check my emails and plan out the order of the work I will be completing for the day.

The three activities I’m most likely to do in a day are…

1. Process administration work (preparing financial statements, tax return and related report) for a self-managed superannuation fund.

2. Conduct an audit (whether it is a financial audit or trust account audit).

3. Prepare income tax returns for tax clients.

Something people might not realise I do is…

Investigate technical issues with our tax software. While we do have IT staff, issues with our tax software often require an accountant input to solve so I am responsible for investigating and fixing these issues.

Something I didn’t think I would be doing as a Chartered Accountant is…

Getting to work in so many different areas. I do tax work, audit (both financial and trust account), SMSF’s (both administration and audit), and I have started branching out into business services.

Something I did think I’d be doing is…

Getting to plan my own work schedule (i.e. I get given a list of clients at the start of the year and get to manage them and plan out how to complete all their work throughout the year).

Something students who are considering being a Chartered Accountant need to think about is…

Whether you can handle the extra workload that comes with being a Chartered Accountant. The extra few years of study and the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements add quite an additional strain, so you need to be sure you can handle it without burning yourself out.

Being a Chartered Account is rewarding but being happy is what’s most important.

Something I wish I knew about being a Chartered Accountant is…

That CPD is generally not free.

The best bit about my job is…

Being able to help clients, help them lodge their reports on time, minimise their tax, and achieve financial success.
