Creating the perfect study space

Are you struggling to study? Too many distractions or just haven’t got the right flow? Revamp your study space!

I studied laying on my bed with my laptop on my knees, phone in my hand, surrounded by snacks. Although I claimed this worked and I was ‘getting things done,’ my ineffective space allowed me to get easily distracted and produce lower quality work.

Your study space is critical to your ability to study effectively. This doesn’t necessarily imply that you have to find a place that’s completely silent and set it up as your study area, but it does mean you should find a place to study that fits your specific personality and learning style.

If you are studying Term 1, now is the time to create your perfect study space. Check out my top tips…

1. PICK ONE PLACE AND MAKE IT YOURS

Elect one room or area as your study space, over time your brain will catch on. Whenever you arrive at that space, you will enter ‘study-mode’ and will eliminate procrastination time. Moving between study areas can be mentally straining since you’ll always have new distractions to process and overcome.

CQUni provides students with access to a number of study spaces at each campus. Check them out!

2. CALENDARS

Purchase a wall calendar and a planner. Jot down all your assessments, events and social activities in advance so you can schedule your time wisely. Having an easily accessible wall calendar will help you prioritise your study.

3. KEEP IT TIDY

Ensure you keep your desk organised and tidy as it helps you stay focused. Messiness and clutter distract the mind, increases anxiety, and can make you feel less motivated.

Before you start your study session, ensure you have everything you need so you’re not running around looking for things, breaking your concentration each time.

4. MAKE IT COMFORTABLE

Although laying on my bed was comfortable, it was not the most productive space to be studying. You want to enjoy your study space. You want to be comfortable, but not too comfortable. Change out of your pyjamas before you crack open your books to give your mind another signal that this isn’t lounge time, but study time.

Make your area comfortable for your body. Get a suitable chair to support your back and posture when you’re studying. Check the lighting and temperature. If you are at the library, bring a jumper. If you are at home, open a window to let in natural light.

5. ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS

It is a study space for a reason. Eliminate the distractions. Put your phone away, close down your social media and online shopping windows and put the snacks away! Your study space is for studying.

If you follow these tips, you will create a perfect study space. Remember, take breaks and make time to relax.

HAVE FUN STUDYING!
