Your step by step guide to university admission centres

Firstly Congratulations! Making the decision to study is a big one and you’ve made it!

We know that making that next step in putting your application and understanding what you need to do, might be a little confusing. So we’ve put together a checklist to make sure you’re ready to apply.

Admission Centres

All undergraduate and some Diploma level course admissions are processed by a state-based tertiary admissions centre. For Queensland this is the Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC).

To start your application process with an admission centre, you will need to create a user account and nominate up to 6-course preferences that you would like to apply for.

Preferences

Ordering your preferences is an important step in the application process. The first thing is you should identify the 6 courses that you would like to study you should order them as follows;

  • 1st and 2nd Preferences – Your most preferred course.
  • 3rd and 4th Preferences – Your back up courses that you would be happy to study if you don’t get into the 1st or 2nd preference
  • 5th and 6th Preferences – Pathway courses

If you change your mind after submitting your application, don’t worry you can change your preferences if you need to.

Entry requirements & OP/ Selection Ranks

It’s a good idea to check if your preferred courses have any entry requirements or prerequisites

If you haven’t heard the term prerequisite, don’t worry we’ll explain.

Prerequisites are subjects that must be studied before you are permitted entry into a course. For example, Engineering requires maths – so Maths is a pre-requisite.

If you don’t meet or haven’t studied the perquisites or meet the entry requirements, don’t panic, you just may have to consider a bridging course like STEPS.

Now that you’ve submitted your application and any supporting documentation you can celebrate! What’s next though? Once your application has been processed and meets all the criteria you may be offered a place in your course.
