CQUNI SPOTLIGHT – Featuring Michele Palu

CQUniversity Bundaberg Student Counsellor Michele Palu has been with the University for more than 20 years and supported hundreds of students during their learning journeys. Her biggest highlight so far this year was Tuesday, 1 May, when she was able to help even more students during University Mental Health Day.

What is your first memory?
I was about three years old – sitting on my father’s lap, while driving around in a ute, checking out the lambs (we had a sheep property).

Are you a CQUni Alumni? If so, what did you graduate in?
Yes, of course. A Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Sociology and Welfare.

What was a recent highlight in your life?
Being told that I am going to be a grandmother for the first time!

What do you love most about your role?
The variety of the work. Student Counselling is more than helping students with personal and mental health issues. It includes running workshops for staff and students, guest lectures, organising events such as University Mental Health Day and connecting with the community.

What is the best thing about being at CQUni?
The wonderful and caring staff, and watching students transform into capable professionals.

If you could solve any social issue in your community, what would you tackle first?
Care and non-judgement of all mental illness.

What’s the biggest way a student has inspired you?
I have known students with significant personal and mental health challenges, who have persevered and succeeded in obtaining their qualifications. They then move on to acquire work and become competent professionals.

What is the luckiest thing that has happened to you?
Meeting my partner who has taught me so much, personally and professionally.

Why should people study at CQUni?
Great support and great staff gives students a chance to grow academically and personally and be what they want to be!

  1. It is when you know you are talking to someone who cares, is a professional and encourages you to be.
