CQUNI SPOTLIGHT – Featuring Abishek Panchal

Information Technology student Abishek (Abi) Panchal moved to Melbourne from India for his studies. A self-described “Z-list celebrity”, Abi is an avid stand-up comedian, guitarist and pianist. He also juggles study with two IT start-ups that he founded, a seat on CQUni’s Student Representative Council and a busy social life. He also recently been appointed as a Change Champion with the Office of Social Innovation.

What was a recent highlight of your life?

There have been quite a few highlights recently! I got to meet the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and other MPs and attend Question Time at the Australian Parliament in Canberra. I also got to attend the 3 Day Startup Global Roundup in Austin, Texas.

What is the best thing about being at CQUni?

The best thing about CQUniversity Melbourne is that it is very multicultural! CQUni has provided me with many opportunities including Change Champion Social Innovation Ambassador, International Students Ambassador, Peer Advisor, Undergraduate International Higher Education Representative at SRC and Campus Life Committee member. I love all these roles as I get to see the University from all perspectives.

How are you changing the world?

I am not – the world is changing itself! I receive lots of love from my parents and I try to return it by loving every individual in society.

What is a motto or phrase that you live by?

“Winners don’t do different things, they do the same things differently” – Shiv Khera.

What is your favourite film or book of all time?

The Book that Made Your World by Vishal Mangalwadi is my favourite book – it compares Western and Eastern philosophy and values. My favourite film is Oh My God! (a satirical comedy film about every religion).

Tell us something your colleagues don’t know about you?

Most of my stand-up comedy material comes from my work and class colleagues.

If you could solve any social issue in your community, what would you tackle first?

Hunger! We all live to fill our stomach, and we need to fill our stomachs to thrive.
