CQUNI SPOTLIGHT – Featuring Professor Judith Brown

Music and the Arts flow through Professor Judith Brown’s veins. The Director of the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music is truly dedicated to the industry and the success of her students, so much so that she was recently awarded an Order of Australia (AM) as part of the 2017 Australia Day Honours.

What was a recent highlight of your life?

Being awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to music education as an academic and teacher, to professional organisations, and to the community.

Are you a CQUni Alumni? If so, what did you graduate in?

Yes, I graduated with a Doctor of Education and my inspiring supervisors were Professor Bruce Knight and Associate Professor Steven Pace.

What do you love most about your role?

I get to be involved in lots of music and theatre performances as a performer and as a producer and teacher, working alongside great colleagues, inspiring industry professionals and of course our talented students. Everyone has gifts and talents that need to be recognised, encouraged and nurtured in their work, study and within the community. My role is to help make this happen with those people I come into contact with.

What is the best thing about your CQUni campus?

Being in Mackay. This is a great place to live and work, with great natural beauty and a community that supports the arts in its many forms.

Jamie Oliver is coming for dinner – what do you make for him?

My husband will cook roast lamb using Jamie Oliver’s tips and I will make a lemon meringue pie.

Which major arts event would you like to see live?

Phantom of the Opera on the West End in London where Paul Tabone (CQCM graduate) is currently performing.

  1. This talented woman has inspired young people for a long time… it’s been her passion – as a young woman in the eighties she lead a group of teens in a youth choir (rock gospel) with her music style bringing something unique and fresh. Well done and congratulations. Thank you Judith for inspiring us then… and the opportunities you gave us!
