I did. You can. You will – How CQUni allowed me to change career

img_0929My name is Jenny Dowell, I’m 51 and I’ve just completed a Certificate III in Fitness at CQUniversity Mackay City.

At 51, I found myself at a crossroad in my life. Finding myself out of work I chose to reinvent myself changing my career path. For me it was a chance to learn new skills in an area I am passionate about, fitness.

Completing a Certificate III in Fitness at the CQUniversity Mackay City campus appealed to me because it included classes in school hours, great industry respected teachers and the ability to complete all practical work in the new on-site gym.  The skills I have gained from my qualification have prepared me for a successful career in the fitness industry and through self-discovery I’ve broken my own personal exercise bad habits. I have learnt how to keep myself motivated through injury and achieve my own fitness goals, and now I will be able to encourage others on their own fitness journey.

The best thing about studying on campus at CQUniversity Mackay City was the newly renovated multi-purpose canteen area with its bright modern furniture as well as the convenience of easy parking in the new car park. I enjoyed the social aspect of studying on-campus, particularly getting to know my class mates who are many years younger than me. Sharing life experiences I got to learn a lot about their own struggles with mixing study with a social life, sporting commitments, job seeking and making ends meet. Despite different levels in fitness and experience of my class mates I always felt included, and the class supported one another when it came to major practical tasks including running group exercise classes.

Upon graduation I am now hooked on learning more and expanding my knowledge on how the human body works. I have enrolled to complete a Certificate IV in Fitness in 2017. Once I have completed my studies I hope to establish a career in the fitness industry, working with older clients who share the importance in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing at any age.

For those thinking of studying with CQUniversity, I would say to seriously consider it. The university provides an intimate learning experience where you can build relationships with your teachers and have easy access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to get you where you want to be in your career.

If you’re looking to find out more, I’d encourage you to attend a TAFE Careers Expo in Gladstone, Mackay or Rockhampton on Tuesday, 24 January from 2 – 5 pm. Register your interest so the team can keep you up-to-date with information specific to your event of interest.
